Primary Schools Info Sheet
Aim:
To raise awareness of the benefits of computing to primary school children in order to increase IT literacy and to attempt to address the future skills needs for IT practitioners
The Primary School Competition is an art competition with this theme:
The benefits of computers in our lives today or in the future (such as Telephones; Computer games; Internet, Health care; Car, rail and plane travel; Banking; Sport; Television; Films; Kitchen equipment; Helping the environment)
Your entry could be a
- picture, possibly with the use of computer
- digital photos, showing the use of editing
- collage
The entries cannot be 3 dimensional and must be through the primary school.
It could be by a single child, a team from a particular year or by a whole
year at the primary school. (Computing software could be used to assist or
produce the entry).
Judging Criteria
Originality of ideas (linked to the theme).
Creative use of the material.
The effectiveness of the output.
Entry
The Primary school will need to provide school name, address, telephone number, web address and two contacts (with email and telephone).
Entry will be by submitting your school details using the + Add your School link in the menu of this site.
Stages of the Competition (to July 2008)
School Stage
The school would decide on 3 entries (there will normally one from each age
group if there are three age groups; but if there are only two age groups,
then there should be at least one from each age group, to a maximum of 3 entries)
Entries to be submitted by mid July 2008; intention to enter by the end of May 2008, so
school could be entered on to the website, and further information sent to
schools. School details, and web address will appear
on the web site on entering
LEA/Constituency Stage (July/ August/October 2008)
To be judged by a maximum of three judges such as local MP, from local newspaper
and local radio. Judging estimated to last approximately two hours
Entries to be on display at local library or university. It is expected that
photographs of the judges with the winning entries would appear in the local
media and also on the Website
BCS Hampshire Final ( Autumn 2008)
Similar arrangements as at the LEA/constituency stage, judges could involve local media and possibly MP or a representative of the LEA.
Regulations
- Entries are not normally returned and no guarantee that there would not
be any damage to an entry while on display or transporting to the next stage.
- Entries possibly could be auctioned on a form of e-auction to raise money
for a suitable charity related to children.
- Age groups would be 5 to 7: 7 to 9 years of age, (Year 2/3 and 4/5), and
10 to 11 if appropriate, age normally as on 01/01/08. For each submission,
the number in team, the minimum, maximum and average age (as of 01/01/08)
should be stated.
- A school is restricted to three entries, normally one at each age group.
(in some counties. children progress at the age of 11 from primary to secondary whereas in other counties, children move at the age of 9 to a Middle School until the age of 13).
- Pictures and Collage:
- To be maximum size of A3, either portrait or landscape
- Must include a means of being hung
- Each entry to include an identification of school, Year, number and age of pupils
The Website
A website would be created to hold digital photographs of all the successful entries with links to the appropriate schools, relevant MPs, sponsors such as a local university.
Prizes and Certificates
There will be up to £1500 in prizes as well as £25 per winning pupil or team.

In addition, the Schools are to be provided with three types of PDF certificates for each winning
pupil (to be passed through to the constituency round), Highly Commended and
Commended.
The certificates would have the logo of BCS and sponsors, and the name of
the school. The head teacher would also be able to sign the certificates and
add the appropriate names.
